Carrboro Hosts Fishing Rodeo

CARRBORO - Kids and parents alike can enjoy a morning of fishing and feasting as a part of the annual Fishing Rodeo.

The Carrboro Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a kid-friendly fishing event complete with fun prizes and a hot dog lunch.

Facility Activities Supervisor TJ Carr says this isn’t their first time at the rodeo.

“The fishing rodeo’s actually been going on for a long time. It’s been cosponsored with the Orange County Recreation and Parks Department and 4H. It’s been at the Strayhorn Pond for about 30 years now.”

Parks and Rec. started the event as a way to promote fishing at a young age. To encourage beginners to come out, they offer prizes of rods and reels in categories such as the craziest fishing hat and smallest fish, in addition to the first fish caught and heaviest fish.

Carr says even the beginners can really surprise you.

“There was a kid last year, probably five years old that caught a 9-pound bass. We were thinking how many adults go through their entire life that are really into fishing and trying to catch a bass like that and never do. And this five year old has already checked it off his list.”

Everyone is invited to participate in this fun free morning. The rodeo takes place at the Strayhorn Pond located off New Hope Church Rd on Saturday, June 4. If you have a pole, bring one since they’ll have a limited supply at the lake. Worms will be provided. Registration begins at 9 a.m. with the hot dog lunch ending at 12:30. In case of rain, the rodeo will go on Sunday afternoon.
