CARRBORO - The group that occupied the site of a proposed CVS in Carrboro is planning its next steps.
Carrboro Commune member Maria Rowan says group organizers are planning another event for the location at 201 North Greensboro Street.
“We’re going to continue with one of our ideas for that space which was to have gardens in the non-building part of the space,” says Rowan.
The group says it will hold a guerrilla gardening event on Saturday, March 17. Rowan says the idea will transform the unused lot into a space that will provide edible, medicinal and beautiful plants to the public.
“(Guerrilla gardening) is taking empty spaces, and this has been done in other places, and planting in them,” says Rowan. “That’s our plan.”
Activists against the proposed CVS store occupied the building last weekend for about four hours before Carrboro police demanded that they leave. Mayor Mark Chilton spent time with the group before they departed to try to engage in a dialogue about their concerns.
***Listen to WCHL News Director Aaron Keck ask Rowan if she is concerned about whether the group will be driven out of the space again by police.
The guerrilla gardening effort may hit a snafu, however. Representatives from CVS Wednesday night announced a plan for a temporary chain fence.
The fence is a response to Saturday’s occupation attempt. Developer Leigh Polzella said CVS considered a fence earlier in the process, but did not construct one out of respect to the town. After the protests Saturday, she said, liability and vandalism concerns forced the issue.
