CHAPEL HILL - The former teacher who gave her name to Chapel Hill’s Rashkis Elementary School, Zora Rashkis, died on Tuesday at the age of 98.

Zora Rashkis came to Chapel Hill in 1963 after winning awards for teaching in Cleveland. For the next 16 years, she worked at Phillips and Culbreth Junior High Schools, chairing the Language Arts Department at both schools. Around the community she became known for her weekly local TV show, “Meet The Teacher,” which aired for more than two decades.

In addition to that, Rashkis also served on numerous volunteer organizations, including the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Public School Foundation, the Chapel Hill Public Library, and the United Way.

Mel and Zora Rashkis Elementary School opened in Meadowmont in 2003.
