Second Rabies Case Reported in Hillsborough

HILLSBOROUGH- Orange County Animal Control reported another rabies case, this time in Hillsborough.

A woman told officials she saw her dog kill a raccoon in the vicinity of Borland and Old Woods Road on Tuesday. The animal tested positive for rabies, making it the second confirmed case this year.

The dog was up to date on its rabies vaccinations, but the owner is being evaluated for secondary exposure as the dog licked her in the face after the incident.

Animal Services Director Bob Marotto warns residents to avoid handling any animal that may have been exposed to rabies, even if it is your own pet.

Next week, Animal Services will host a low-cost vaccination clinic next Thursday from 1-4 at the Animal Services Center on Eubanks Road.
