School Dropouts Rise In Chapel Hill, But Rates Still Relatively Low

CHAPEL HILL - The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction has released the latest data on student dropout rates in the Orange County and Chapel Hill-Carrboro school districts.

44 students dropped out of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools district in 2010-2011, up more than 25 percent from the previous year when 35 students dropped out of school. However, the district still boasts the lowest dropout rate in the Triangle. Only 1.19 students per 100 students dropout.

Comparatively, Orange County schools saw a decline in 2010-2011 of about 18 percent. Only 54 students dropped out in contrast 66 the year before. However, the county system still has a dropout rate of 2.37 dropouts per 100 students. That rate, however, is still lower than neighboring school systems in Durham, Wake and Chatham counties.
