Barnes Is Questionable For Saturday's Game Against Scrappy, Desperate Terrapins

CHAPEL HILL-The Tar Heels have won their last four ACC games and are at the top of the conference standings at 6-1. Meanwhile, the Terrapins have dropped four of their last five games, and are seeking to get out of their losing stretch with a big win against a top five school in Carolina.
The biggest concern for the 19-3 Tar Heels this week has been the health of sophomore forward Harrison Barnes, who did not practice on Thursday after spraining his left ankle in the win against Wake Forest.
Head coach Roy Williams says Barnes is questionable for Saturday’s game against Maryland and won’t know more until after Friday’s practice.
"I won't know everything until after practice today...because if it swells up again after practice, then I won't know about that until we get up to Maryland."
With Barnes being a game-time decision, the Tar Heels may need to rely on their frontcourt for more of their scoring, and recently, Tyler Zeller has been the one who has stepped up to the challenge with some of his best games of the season.
"I haven't talked to (Harrison) so I don't know how bad or good it is right now," he says. "If he shows up and plays, that'll be great for us. If not, then we'll all have to step up and be able to fill in for him."
But Carolina faces a 13-8 Maryland team that is in desperate need of a win. The Terrapins have lost their last three ACC games, including a tough double-overtime loss to Miami on Wednesday.
The Carolina backcourt will have to contend against Maryland guard Terrell Stoglin, who is averaging almost 22 points a game and is one of the top three-point shooters in the conference at 38%.
Williams says the Tar Heels have to do a good job in guarding Stoglin and force other players to beat them.
"He's a high-quantity shooter, but he makes a lot of shots too. He carries the team," he says. "He can make three or four shots in a row and you could believe that you guarded him very well. We've got to try to keep his percentage down...and not put him on the free-throw line where he's an 80% free-throw shooter as well."
The game starts at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday and you can get ready for the contest by listening to the CPI Security Countdown to Tipoff Show at 2:00 p.m.
