Three UNC Students, A Parking Deck, And A Bag Of Cocaine
Aaron Keck Reporting
CHAPEL HILL - Chapel Hill Police arrested three UNC students early Friday morning for using cocaine on top of a Rosemary Street parking deck.
"Officers doing a foot patrol checked the top of the parking deck, (which) closes at dark, and found these three subjects," says Chapel Hill PD Sergeant Josh Mecimore. "They appeared to be using cocaine...on two of them they found drug paraphernalia, and then they found a baggie containing cocaine residue."
The arrest occurred shortly after 1:00 Friday morning at 150 East Rosemary.
20-year-old Jacob Groeschen, 21-year-old Shane Mularkey, and 21-year-old Nicole Suarez were charged with felony cocaine possession and second-degree trespass; Groeschen and Mularkey were also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.
All three arrestees are not only UNC students, but also former athletes. Mularkey is a former Tar Heel linebacker, who left the football team last May after undergoing shoulder surgery; Groeschen was a walk-on, but never played; and Suarez is a former member of the UNC cross-country team.
Of the three, Mecimore says only Mularkey has any prior arrests on his record—in August, for underage possession of alcohol.
Groeschen, Mularkey and Suarez were taken before the magistrate and released on a $1000 secure bond.
