CH Transit Employees To Celebrate Rosa Parks With Performance

CHAPEL HILL - Chapel Hill Transit employees will perform a one-act play about Rosa Parks on Saturday at University Mall.

The play “Why Should I Move?” is being held in conjunction with Black History Month, celebrating the achievements of black Americans throughout history.

Parks was a central figure in the Civil Rights movement, best known for refusing to give up her seat on a Montgomery Alabama bus. The play will reenact that day.

It will be narrated by “old Rosa” talking to the audience 56 years after the event.

CH Transit bus operator Michele Sykes will play “old Rosa” and Sheila Neville will fill the role of “young Rosa.”

Other transit employees will be involved in the performance, too.

The event will also feature a performance from the transit’s acapella group.

Kathy Williams, with the UNC Playmakers Theater, helped the employees develop their roles and the theater is providing the costumes.

The performance is slated for 3 p.m. on Saturday.
