School Board Rejects Glenwood Redistricting Plan

CHAPEL HILL -School officials have found an alternative to spot-redistricting to solve overcrowding at two local elementary schools.

The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School Board voted Thursday to move pre-kindergarten programs from Glenwood and Seawell elementaries to make room for new class space to ease overcrowding.

Glenwood parent Michael Lee told the board he strongly supports the new plan.

“I’m glad to hear that the administration recommends this. To me, this applies a one-year solution to a one-year problem,” said Lee.

Pre-K programs at Glenwood and Seawell will move to Rashkis and Estes Hills for the next school year. Previously the board had considered spot-redistricting for the Glen Lennox neighborhood, but with major redistricting looming once Elementary 11 opens in 2013, school board members said they’d prefer a more temporary solution.

“None of these are particularly welcome options, but this is probably the least onerous for the community,” said Greg McElveen. “I do like the idea of not doing the spot-redistricting now, so we get maximum flexibility to optimize the balance with Elementary 11.”

The board also voted to spend money to upfit a mobile classroom at Ephesus to accommodate future pre-K classes. The relocation and renovation could cost as much as $205,000, to be paid out of the district’s fund balance.
