CHAPEL HILL-The UNC women’s basketball team jumped to a big lead early on, but faced a big second half scare before taking the 64-56 win over UVA on Friday night.

Chay Shegog led the way for the Heels with a whopping 20 points, including six straight buckets in the last few minutes of play.

UNC led by 11 points at the half, but the Cavaliers had cut the lead to just five midway through the second half. That’s when a big play from Shegog kept the excitement going for the Heels.

Unfortunately for UNC, UVA tied things up with less than four minutes left to play. It was a one-point game with about a minute left to play, and Candace Wood had the chance to seal the deal.

Ataira Franklin was a big factor in the late-game scare; the Heels held her scoreless in the first half before she managed 11 points in the second. Head Coach Sylvia Hatchell says although she’s happy about the win, the team shouldn’t have let such a large lead slip away.

"We had two layups to go up by 15 and we just didn't make shots around the basket," she says. "We just have to finish things off. But all I can say is we're getting better. Next week's a tough week for us, but we just have to keep fighting and battling."

UNC is now 16-5 overall and 6-2 in the ACC. On Monday, the Heels will face their biggest rivals in the Duke Blue Devils. Tipoff for that game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
