Saturday and Sunday at 11:00am
SideDish, hosted by Deborah Miller, offers an insider’s perspective into the world of food, wine and all things house and home. Deborah gets up-close and personal with area chefs as they tell all about their restaurants, what got them started, what keeps them going. You might just as easily find Bill Smith on the Carrboro bike path hunting for honeysuckle as you will circulating the room at Crook's Corner. But today, you'll find him and partner Gene Hamer visiting with me as we talk about the 30th birthday of theChapel Hill/Carrboro restaurant that started it all. Happy birthday, guys! Without you, where would we be? I don't even want to think about

Lynn Steinberg got tired of having to track down gourmet food gifts to send to friends and family around the country, so she just started her own company GoodiesforGifts.com. With a focus on small, local vendors, you can find and send Sassy Marshmallow Donuts from Seattle or Cake Pops from Raleigh Cake Pops right down the road. After all, food is love. Lynn got that right on the first try!

Alice Medrich is considered the First Lady of Chocolate ... and rightly so as she's widely credited with introducing the chocolate truffle to the United States. I, for one, thank her for that! Don't you? Let's get to the bottom of that question and other sweet thoughts.

How lucky we are that Jean Anderson calls Chapel Hill home. And she may have the most perfect job in the world ... not only is she the author of more than 20 cookbooks, she gets to travel around the world writing about food and wine and culture. Jean, you are my heroine!

Portia McKnight and Flo Hawley probably did not grow up imagining that they'd one day be the cheese queens of Chapel Hill. With farmhouse cheeses made from their own Jersey herd, they even named several of their creations after local landmarks - Calvander and Hickory Grove. And let's not forget Carolina Moon, New Moon, and Farmers' Cheese. Yummy cheese from soulful-eyed cows ... gotta like that!

Rebecca Lang, author of Quick-Fix Southern, and I got off on a bit of a tangent about our love of pimento cheese and deviled eggs, but that just shows our shared passion for Southern cooking. She is as charming and easy to get to know as her books ... and her accomplishments are so long it would almost take a whole new book just to list them.

If only Gina & Pat Neely would adopt me. I can get “down home” and eat barbeque pretty much every day of the week. I can celebrate anything. Plus I feel like we’re family since I lived in Memphis for so long and ate at Neely’s ALOT. Talking with them on SideDish was truly a highlight. Join us as we talk about how to turn every day into a celebration!

Martha Jenkins and Katie Horn love to go to work every day and why shouldn’t they when they get to spend all day at Kitchenworks where every square inch is packed from floor to ceiling with a dazzling array of kitchen goods. Catching up with Sam Poley, Director of Communications at the Durham Convention & Visitors Bureau, is always an experience! His love of Durham is both obvious and infectious. Bill & Andrea Whittington/The Blue Note Grill
The Blue Note Grill in Durham quickly became one of my favorite places in the area. Is it because of the blues music you can hear almost every night of the week? Or because their BBQ reminds me of Memphis? Or because it's my "Cheers" and "everybody knows my name?" It's all of that, plus owners Bill and Andrea Whittington are just two of the nicest

What do you get when you have four friends who love to eat and make dumplings? If this was a band, Chela Yu, her dumplingness, would be “the girl singer.” But since this is a food truck, you get “Chirba Chirba” (translation: Eat, eat!). Chela andthe boys, Yin Song, Nate Adams, Ali Safavi, make up the Dumpling Squad. If you’ve missed one of their dumpling raids, tsk, tsk. Now get out

Having Joe Kwon, fellow food blogger with Taste on Tour: Food on the Road and cellist for The Avett Brothers sitting across from me felt … well … double, triple, quadruple wondermous. And with locations in both Cary and Greensboro, you have twice the chance to discover how all his passions just seem to happily collide on one plate.

Sheri Castle wears many hats. Food writer. Cooking Teacher. Recipe tester & developer. I mean, imagine having the job of testing your friend's recipes before their cookbooks are published ... she did just that with Bill Smith's Seasoned in the South. Where she found time to write her own is beyond me, but The New Southern Garden is enjoying great success.

Just down the road a piece out in Saxapahaw, accidental farmer Suzanne Nelson runs Cozi Farm, a diversified, thriving polyculture where animals are treated with reverence and grace, earthworms are cherished, and all critters eat a species-appropriate diet. I didn’t write that last bit, but it so describes Cozi Farm’s mission that I couldn’t resist using Suzanne’s own words.
