Tyler Zeller scored 22 points while John Henson, Harrison Barnes and Reggie Bullock also scored in double-digits as UNC overcame a three-point halftime deficit to beat Maryland on Saturday 83-74 in College Park.
Henson tallied a double-double by grabbing 12 rebounds and Kendall Marshall fell just short of a double-double as he racked up 16 assists and 9 points. He did, however, have an unusually high 6 turnovers in the game.
The Tar Heels trailed by as many as nine points early in the second half, but managed to regain the lead with about nine minutes to play. The nine-point comeback is the largest of the season for UNC.
1st HALF RECAP:
UNC jumped out to the early lead 15-9, but Maryland slowly creeped back into the game and took the lead with about ten minutes remaining in the first half 18-17.
The teams traded buckets over the next several minutes and the Terps took a 29-24 lead. Tyler Zeller made a bucker to score his 10th point of the game to pull the game within three. Moments later, John Henson’s free throw tied the game at 29.
It didn’t take long for Maryland to get back in front. The next play they converted a three-pointer to make the score 32-29.
After the final media timeout in the first half, Maryland’s Terrell Stoglin hit a three-pointer to make the score 35-31.
The game was very physical in the first half of play with both teams racking up fouls.
Maryland’s Alex Len tipped in a missed shot near the end of the half to give the Terrapins a 40-37 lead heading into the break.
Tyler Zeller had 14 first half points and six rebounds in the frame while Kendall Marshall contributed 9 assists in the opening half.
2nd HALF RECAP:
Maryland started out the second half outscoring the Tar Heels 8-2 to jump to a 48-39 lead.
Kendall Marshall was able to net a three-pointer for UNC with about 15 minutes left to cut the lead to four points, 48-44.
Production from Carolina’s bench was almost non-existent. Five minutes into the second half, UNC bench players had only contributed two points to the 44-point total.
Tyler Zeller picked up a crucial fourth foul with still more than half of the second frame remaining.
With less than 9 minutes to go the Tar Heels took a two point lead, thanks in part to a couple of steals by Kendall Marshall. Just a few plays later, however, he picked up his fourth foul which sent him to the bench and brought back-up point guard Stillman White off the bench.
With less than 8 minutes left UNC held a 63-60 advantage.
With time winding down, Harrison Barnes nailed a nice shot with just more than a minute to go to give the Heels a 76-70 lead.
Maryland fouled a few times down the stretch and UNC finished out the game at the line to win 83-74.
