CARRBORO - Local filmmakers are showing off their talents Sunday at the sixth annual Carrboro Film Festival.
Co-founder and co-chair Jackie Helvey says the event highlights films created by those who live in or are from Carrboro.
“The Carrboro Film Festival was started six years ago and it is a short film festival,” she says. “We got over 100 entries from all across the state and on Sunday we’ll be showing 29 of what we consider the best films.”
All films must be less than 20 minutes, but that’s the only requirement for submission. This year, for the first time, the festival’s organizers considered films from the entire state. Carrboro Film Festival Committee member Margot Lester says the event is a great way to experience the town’s culture.
“I think it’s a really fun way to get involved,” she says. “It’s kind of kooky just like Carrboro but it’s amazing how much local talent we have in terms of filmmakers. We had some great college student films this year which was really exciting.”
Lester says the event will also include a food drive.
“We’re doing a food collection for the folks at Table on Sunday,” she says. “If you bring non-perishable goods—they’re looking for juice boxes, healthy breakfast bars, and canned pasta, they’ll have a table there. You can do some good while you’re having a good time.”
The event is Sunday from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Century Hall at the Carrboro Century Center. Admission is $10 for adults and $3 for children under the age of ten.
